Application and information

applicants under the age of 16 must have a parent fill out this form, however the applicant MUST be the one writing the "essay" answer.

We're grateful to have your application to perform at our 8th Annual National Anthem Audition.

Starting April 11, our panel of judges will select between 20 and 25 singers to be invited to audition live at the Kora Shrine Temple (11 Sabattus Street; Lewiston) on Saturday, April 19, at 3 p.m.

Since we believe that those who submit an application to this event will be serious about this opportunity and will already have a strong vocal talent, we select our invited signers based upon the answer to a simple question:
"What does the Star Spangled Banner mean to you?"

You may write a sentence, or a paragraph, or whatever you believe is necessary to convey your sense of patriotism (500 original words or less. Please do not copy and paste any information from another source for your essay).
We're looking for a singer who can not only perform a stirring, traditional, upbeat rendition of our national anthem, but also someone who "feels" it in their heart every time they perform this song. Our chosen vocalist must also be someone who will be a good representative of our organization, our state, and our country. Stage presence (appearance, posture, confidence) is a significant element in the selection process.

We'll select singers to be invited to the audition based on:

1. Patriotism (as expressed through their brief essay)
2. Spelling (Please use spell-check, and proper punctuation/capitalization)
3. Grammar (We suggest you have your essay proofread if you are uncertain of your grammar)
Remember, this is the only criteria with which we will invite singers to audition, so please put some time and thought into your response.

Invited singers will be notified by email approximately one week prior to the audition. If notified, the singer must RSVP by a certain date to guarantee their spot.

Event Details

Those auditioning for the position of Maine Games National Anthem Vocalist are required to perform the Star Spangled Banner without any additional amplification or accompanyment. Use of a pitchpipe is allowed.

We also require those auditioning to perform the Star Spangled Banner as it was written, without any embellishment, or additional notes. We're only interested in a traditional, patriotic, upbeat, heartfelt rendition.

Singers must perform their version of the Star Spangled Banner within 90 seconds. No exceptions.

We expect those invited to audition will be dressed properly, at least business casual. No shorts, blue jeans, T-shirts, hats, sneakers or sandels. Please consider this to be a job interview, and you should dress to impress. We'll be taking photos and video of this event for publication.

Those auditioning will be expected to know all of the words to the Star Spangled Banner, and must be able to perform our national anthem without any mistakes. Practice, practice, practice. Even if you think you know all of the words to the song, make sure you double-check with the actual written lyrics. You get one chance to impress the judges. If you are nervous at the audition, we can't have confidence you'll be able to perform before large crowds.

There are three required appearances
: 1) Maine Shrine Circus evening performance on the day of the audition at the Lewiston Collissee; 2) Hadlock Field, in Portland, prior to a Portland Seadogs game (scheduled in conjunction with the Seadogs); 3) Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic, Saturday, July 19, in Biddeford, Maine. Other available opportunities will be added and optional, including additional performances at the Maine Shrine Circus (either Portland or Augusta) during April school vacation week.

The Maine Games will provide a $50 gas card to our vocalist immediately following our audition to help pay for travel, however, the remainder of travel and other expenses may be the responsibility of the vocalist or their family. The Maine Games solicits donations from the public and supporters of our singers to help cover the expense of travel to and from performances.

The Maine Games may help promote our vocalist in other ways such as press releases, and printed promotional materials.
