POPARD super-workshop

Understanding Challenging Behaviour
This workshop will help participants develop a basic understanding about behaviour and the underlying causes of challenging behaviour. In addition, some common strategies for preventing and managing challenging behaviour will be discussed.

Example learning outcomes include:
  • Define behaviour and challenging behaviour, and develop operational definitions of behaviour.
  • Label and describe the ABCs (of challenging behaviour) and identify examples of them.
  • Identify the different functions that behaviours serve, and explain why it is important to determine the function prior to intervention.
  • Use ABC data collection to determine the function of behaviour.
  • Define replacement behaviours and describe how to select one to teach.
  • Discriminate between punishment and extinction, and explain the pitfalls of using punishment procedures.
  • Explain why it is important to collect data.
